Indoor Air Quality – A Potential Health Threat

Written by  Jesse Muench

Indoor air quality often gets overlooked, because when most people think of polluted air, they assume it’s only outside from vehicle exhaust and factory emissions.  What people don't realize is that indoor air can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air. Now consider that most people spend the majority of their day indoors with a furnace or air conditioner continually circulating this air throughout the home and you can see that this could be an issue.

You may be wondering where all this pollution is coming from. Well, there are a variety of sources including paints and varnishes, cigarette smoke, cleaning chemicals, excess moisture, pet dander, and more. What’s worse is most newer homes are built fairly air tight, so most of these toxins continue to build up over time. The effects of these pollutants can range from asthma attacks and allergic reactions, to infections and sickness, or even death.

By now you’re probably seeing the big picture and realizing that indoor air pollution can become quite a serious issue. To make things even more difficult, indoor air impurities are a multi-faceted problem because of the variety of sources and types of pollutants. However, for each of these problems Holland Home Services / One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning has methods to reduce or eliminate these health threats.

We care about all of our customers, both old and new, and we want to ensure your indoor air is as comfortable and healthy as possible. So if you’re in the Greater Milwaukee area we are your one stop shop for indoor air quality solutions.

We can install products like HEPA air purifiers and MicroPower Guard filters that can actually pull micro-particles (harmful particles too small for standard filters to catch), and cigarette smoke out of your air, leaving you with renewed air. If you want to take the next step to clean, fresh air we can add a UV light, which will sterilize, kill, or neutralize harmful super-small particles, germs, and viruses.

Humidity is another source of indoor air pollution. Having too much or too little humidity can create a suitable environment for mildew, dust mites, germs, mold and other nasty little creations to thrive, not to mention too much humidity could damage your home. To ensure your home is at the right level of humidity we have whole house humidifiers and dehumidifiers which help keep your house from being a breeding ground for germs.

Finally we can tune up your furnace and air conditioner to make sure your temperatures are ideal for your health, and not-so-ideal for bacteria, viruses, and anything else that could pose risks. Proper temperature regulation is important for keeping you feeling your best, and your home as well.
